Our second edition of Starter's Review introduces Karen Jehanian, Founder & CEO of KMJ consulting. A Drexel alumna herself, Jehanian always knew she would ultimately start her own business; it was her goal as early as 7th grade. With an undergraduate degree from the College of Engineering, she spent the beginning of her career in various engineering and transportation roles. As she traversed the working world, her entrepreneurial spirit grew. She discusses this entrepreneurial journey with Dr. Donna De Carolis. Prior to starting her business, Jehanian received an Executive MBA from LeBow. From her time leading a one-person startup, to running a large team that continues to be a huge player in the Philly community, Jehanian is a role model for budding starters.

At KMJ Consulting, company culture plays an integral role. Jehanian explains, "I care about people achieving their goals as well as mine. I believe that I can help my employees reach their goals." It's important to establish a strong culture that the team can rally behind. Caring about employees individual goals, even outside of the office, empowers the team. This collaborative atmosphere encourages employees to work hard, work together, and emphasizes communication skills.

Jehanian believes her autonomous and well-rounded employees are the foundation of KMJ Consulting. While some might think of the stereotypical engineer as math or technically focused with less communicative skills, Jehanian sees interpersonal skills as bedrock traits for a successful engineer. Satisfied clients agree.

As a woman entrepreneur in a usually male-dominated field, Karen acknowledges potential prejudice. Still, Jehanian chooses to not look at gender as a differentiator and instead lets her work speak for itself. Her strategic vision and big-picture thinking ability allow her to forecast client's anticipations and prepare accordingly. A successful entrepreneur does not let obstacles obstruct her path to success. Instead, she takes each experience at face value, focuses on the future, and does not let bias or burdens affect her overall mission.

Philadelphia itself has been a great home for KMJ Consulting. Born and raised in Philly and proud to call our city home, Jehanian believes that positive energy and young workers create an atmosphere conducive to growth and innovation. Projects like Schuylkill Yards and the 30th Street Amtrak Master Plan bring huge opportunities to residents and companies in Philadelphia, especially companies in the engineering and transportation industries.

Jehanian molds both life and work experiences into creating a company that employees can rally behind. To anyone that wants to start something, Jehanian says, "Take a risk.” Comfort zones are not allowed in entrepreneurship and you cannot let fear hold you back.
